Lion Dance Performance: A Vibrant Tradition of Luck and Prosperity At Putra Medical Centre

January 2025

CAPTION: “This cute lion reaches for the stars with fireworks in the night sky.” In Chinese culture, fireworks are used to ward off evil spirits and usher in a new year filled with good fortune. At Putra Medical Centre’s pre-Chinese New Year celebration, the playful lion reaching for the stars under a shower of fireworks symbolises our ambition to reach new heights in healthcare and continue bringing transformative care to our patients.

The lion dance has been a staple of Chinese New Year celebrations for centuries, symbolising good fortune, success, and the warding off of evil spirits. At Putra Medical Centre (PMC), the lion dance is more than just a performance—it’s a tradition that reflects the hospital’s commitment to prosperity, resilience, and community spirit.

On the 15th of January 2025, Putra Medical Centre will kick off its Chinese New Year celebrations with a lively lion dance that will not only set the festive tone but also mark the beginning of a year of growth and transformation. The lion, with its colourful costume and energetic movements, is believed to bring good luck and drive away negativity. As the dancers move and twirl, they mimic the lion’s playful and powerful traits, energising the entire space and imbuing it with positivity.

CAPTION: Surrounded by the mighty lions, Dato’ Dr. Lim Kim Huat, JP, stands tall in this moment captured during PMC’s pre-CNY festivities. The lion dance, traditionally performed to bring blessings of wealth and prosperity, reflects Putra Medical Centre’s unwavering commitment to leading the way in patient care and community wellness. This image embodies the strength and unity of PMC’s leadership and staff.

Lee Yong Qian, PMC’s Strategic Director, shared the significance of this performance, stating, “The lion dance is a powerful symbol of  new beginnings. It reflects the resilience we value so highly at PMC and sets a tone of hope, prosperity, and strength as we enter the new year.”

This high-energy spectacle is designed to captivate the audience and serve as a reminder that in the face of challenges, there is always room for growth. The lion’s dance is not just about the physical performance but about the symbolism of renewal that accompanies the arrival of the Year of the Snake. The snake, representing transformation, will encourage all of us to embrace change, adapt, and continue striving for excellence.

The traditional lion dance is also said to bring good luck to businesses and homes, making it an essential part of Chinese New Year celebrations. At PMC, this performance connects with our values of success, community support, and a commitment to health and wellness. “In healthcare, luck alone doesn’t get us far,” Lee emphasized. “It’s the trust, care, and dedication of our team that drives our success, and we’re excited to share this moment with our patients and partners.”

This year, as the dancers perform in front of PMC’s welcoming entrance, surrounded by bright red lanterns and festive decorations, the energy will be infectious, leaving everyone with a sense of optimism and excitement for the year ahead.

The lion dance is a perfect example of how PMC embraces both cultural traditions and modern healthcare practices. It reminds us all that through teamwork, energy, and a focus on positive outcomes, we can achieve anything. As the lion dance concludes, the hope is that its positive energy will stay with everyone, filling PMC’s spaces with renewed vigor and the belief that great things lie ahead.

In this Year of the Snake 2025, PMC’s Chinese New Year celebrations are centered around the core values of unity, prosperity, and transformation. As PMC Strategic Director Lee Yong Qian emphasised, the theme “Unity and Good Health for All” reflects the hospital’s commitment to building strong relationships within the community while promoting the well-being of all. This festive season, PMC is focused on fostering inclusivity, celebrating cultural traditions, and expressing gratitude for the continued support of patients, staff, and partners.

The Year of the Snake symbolises wisdom, strength, and resilience—qualities that align with PMC’s vision for continued growth and improvement, both in healthcare and in nurturing the bonds that make the community stronger.

CAPTION: The lion dance, a centuries-old Chinese tradition, is believed to bring good fortune and chase away evil spirits. The vibrant lion dance performance at PMC’s pre-CNY celebration embodies these powerful symbols, setting the tone for a year of prosperity, health, and happiness. The lions’ majestic pose against the evening sky represents the strength and resilience PMC strives to bring to the community in 2025.
