World Hepatitis Day: Understanding Hepatitis and Supporting Liver Health
World Hepatitis Day, observed annually on 28 July, is a global public health initiative that raises awareness about viral hepatitis and its impact on individuals, families, and communities worldwide.
In Malaysia, hepatitis remains an important public health concern. Many people living with hepatitis may not experience symptoms in the early stages, making awareness and early detection an important part of liver health education. As communities around the world mark World Hepatitis Day, Putra Medical Centre Alor Setar (PMC) joins the effort to promote greater understanding of hepatitis through educational initiatives and public awareness activities.
At PMC, health education is an important part of supporting community well-being. By encouraging awareness and informed health decisions, we hope to contribute to healthier communities across Kedah and northern Malaysia.
Understanding Hepatitis
Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver and is commonly caused by viral infections, although other factors may also affect liver health. Some forms of hepatitis can become chronic and may increase the risk of long-term liver complications if left unmanaged.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), viral hepatitis continues to affect millions of people globally. Despite advances in prevention, testing, and treatment, awareness remains an important challenge.
Several misconceptions about hepatitis continue to persist. Some people believe that hepatitis only affects certain groups of individuals or that it is uncommon in Malaysia. In reality, hepatitis can affect people from all walks of life. Understanding the facts can help reduce stigma and encourage informed conversations about liver health. Awareness also plays an important role in supporting early detection. Learning about risk factors, prevention strategies, and available healthcare resources can help individuals make informed decisions about their health.
Supporting Liver Health
While different types of hepatitis have different causes and modes of transmission, there are several general measures that may support liver health and reduce the risk of certain infections:
-
- Learn about available vaccinations, including those for hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
- Practise good hygiene and food safety habits.
- Avoid sharing personal items that may come into contact with blood.
- Seek information from reliable healthcare and public health sources.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes balanced nutrition and regular physical activity.
It is also helpful to be aware of symptoms that may be associated with liver conditions, such as persistent fatigue, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark-coloured urine, or unexplained abdominal discomfort. These symptoms can occur in various health conditions and should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
PMC: Supporting Community Health Through Awareness
At Putra Medical Centre Alor Setar (PMC), health education forms part of our commitment to supporting the communities we serve. Through public awareness initiatives, educational resources, and preventive health programmes, PMC encourages individuals and families to learn more about health conditions that may affect their well-being, including liver health.
By fostering greater awareness, we hope to contribute to informed healthcare decisions and healthier communities across Kedah and northern Malaysia.
A Shared Responsibility
This World Hepatitis Day, individuals, families, healthcare professionals, and communities all have a role to play in increasing awareness and reducing stigma surrounding hepatitis.
