Plan Your Visit

What to bring, what to expect on the ward, and when you can visit.

Coming into hospital is easier when you know what happens next. Whether your admission is planned or an emergency, here is what to bring, what a day on the ward looks like, and when your family can visit.

Visiting hours

General ward 10:00am – 10:00pm One visitor after hours, with a pass.
High Dependency Unit (HDU) 12:00pm – 2:00pm
5:00pm – 9:00pm
One person at a time. No children.

Between 10:00pm and midnight, one visitor may enter the general ward after registering with security for a visitor pass. The pass shows the room number you are visiting.

Before and during your stay

What happens during a visit

The usual sequence for an outpatient appointment.

  • Registration
  • Consultation with your doctor
  • Investigations, if any are needed
  • Review and discussion of the results
  • Payment and discharge

For surgery the sequence is longer: pre-operative assessment, admission, the procedure, recovery, then discharge planning.

Getting here

Traffic in Alor Setar can be heavy at peak hours, and during festive periods such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. Please allow extra time.

  • 20 minutes from Alor Setar Airport
  • 15 minutes from the Alor Setar Utara toll plaza on the PLUS Expressway
  • 10 minutes by car from Alor Setar railway station
  • Car parking is available on site, with valet service

What to bring

An admission kit with basic toiletries is available on request, and replaced as needed — you are welcome to bring your own instead.

  • Underwear, slippers and a set of clothes to go home in — the hospital provides a gown for your stay
  • Your own medication, if your PMC doctor confirms you should keep taking it
  • A mobile phone and charger, at your own risk

What to leave at home

  • Jewellery, electronics and large sums of cash
  • Food or fruit with a strong smell, such as durian
  • Alcohol of any kind

The hospital cannot be responsible for valuables brought onto the ward.

A day on the ward

The unit nurse will welcome you and show you around your room. Your doctor and nurse will agree a plan of care with you, and dietary advice is given where the medical team thinks it is needed.

  • The day starts between 5:00am and 6:00am with a wash and bed preparation
  • Housekeeping keep the room clean through the day
  • Meals are served to schedule
  • Lights out at 10:00pm

If you are having surgery

Your consultant will take you through the procedure in detail. You or a family member will be asked to read, understand and sign a consent form, and the anaesthetist will carry out a pre-anaesthesia check.

  • You will need to fast the night before, including water
  • Your doctor may ask for a bowel preparation beforehand
  • The surgical site is shaved or clipped and marked, where that applies
  • Contact lenses, prosthetics, dentures and jewellery are removed

Staying with a patient

In a multi-bedded room, one person may stay overnight with the patient.

  • No companions in the High Dependency Unit, labour ward, operating theatre recovery or other critical areas — visits are allowed at set times
  • If a patient moves to one of those areas, their companion should vacate the room straight away
  • Once the patient is well enough to return to the ward, the companion may stay again

Infection prevention

We follow infection control practice closely. Our infection control team monitors hospital-associated infection and antibiotic use against national and internationally accepted protocols.

If you have any special requirements you would like to discuss before your stay, please contact customer care well in advance.

Transfers from another hospital

We accept inter-hospital transfer requests, subject to bed availability, specialist availability and clinical suitability. Our clinical team assesses each case and advises.

  • Call us to arrange a transfer — urgent cases are coordinated by phone
  • Transport charges depend on the circumstances, so please ask for a figure before you arrange anything
  • Where you already have a confirmed surgery booking or an approved appointment with us, transport can often be arranged without an additional levy
