June 2025

With an illustrious career crafted from chutzpah and compassion, meet the doctor celebrated for bringing a personalised touch to the operating room.

Dr. Tan Boon Lee is a PMC Alor Setar’s Resident Consultant General and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon

HANDS AND A HEART OF GOLD

While surgical skill is an invaluable asset to the practice of medicine, there are different varieties of surgeons within this far-reaching field, with each area of specialisation unique and purposeful. Putra Medical Centre’s own Dr. Tan Boon Lee, whose practice is set up in Alor Setar, is a resident consultant general and advanced laparoscopic surgeon and specialist of deep expertise. Bringing to the operating table a truly diverse repertoire of proficiencies, with the versatile hands to match, here is a physician touted for his impactful contributions to the patient journey, medical arena and a hospital built on a full history and heritage of compassion, commitment, camaraderie, calibre, and caregiving.

Heightened Tech, Human Touch

To appreciate his passion-fuelled prowess, it is important to understand what his craft spans and how this stellar doctor adds value, especially in an era where the ‘human touch’ is losing its prevalence, presence, and persona of personalisation across many service-centric spaces. Advanced laparoscopic surgery employs the use of a laparoscope—a thin, long instrument inserted into the abdomen using a small incision, through which a tiny camera allows a surgeon to view the abdominal and pelvic organs on a monitor in real time. Inviting a myriad of applications, nowadays almost all conventional surgery can be perform with laparoscopic approach.

The upside of the advanced laparoscopic approach to surgery is multi-faceted. With the patient in mind, this procedure has forever transformed the face of surgical intervention in that it welcomes a faster recovery time, minimal post-operative pain, as well as a lower risk of infection after a surgery. Every cut leaves a scar, but it also marks a milestone for someone who could be fighting for his or her life. If as a doctor I can help ease the burdens of a patient in need of this support, then let it be my top priority to see both their minor and major victories to fruition wherever possible,” Dr. Tan expresses, reflective of the role he plays in the operating theatre, and ready for the future of surgery.

Cruising The Corridors of Care

Having himself walked the many meaningful miles it took to get to where he is in his caregiving career, Dr. Tan is proud to serve alongside a workforce of other benevolent healthcare professionals who put themselves in the shoes of sufferers of every age. This seasoned healer has under his belt a Doctor of Medicine from National Taiwan University, while a gastroenterology and surgery specialist. Before kicking off his tenure at Putra Medical Centre, he completed several stints of clinical training at Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and the surgical department of the Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Today, he is part of various medical boards as well as associations both locally and overseas.

In addition to being fellows of three esteemed professional organization international society of surgery, American College of Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia, he was member of Taiwan Surgical Association, Excelsior Surgical Society, International Society for Digestive Surgery, Malaysian Medical Association, Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, World Endoscopy Organization, American College of Surgeons, International Association for Trauma Surgery and Intensive Care, and Trauma Surgery Society of Malaysia. A prolific personality who is enraptured by the human side of healthcare, Dr. Tan wears these varied hats since the work is fulfilling and his innate calling authentic.

Building Upon Quality of Life

An expansive area when it comes to emergency and life-altering interventions, a surgeon is a pivotal aspect of humanising OT endeavours. Prioritising people, Putra Medical Centre places emphasis on our people, from the patients who come to us in their most vulnerable state to the professionals who complete our mission to serve with conviction, nurture with consideration, and heal with caution. Further capturing the essence of the above, Dr. Tan says: “I have adopted a pre-surgery ritual that I perform prior to entering the operating theatre. Even if the situation feels like a challenge, I consider the most crucial aspects of a patients’ condition and envision the triumph waiting on the other end.

This steadies my mental state and prepares my hands for the possibilities that lie ahead. These steps remind me to focus on what’s important and personalise the offer of care for every patient and their families. Achieving this will mean that everybody wins. Life is precious, but so are outcomes,” Dr Tan admits. A natural leader, he is specialised in textbook and complex surgical procedures. These range from arteriovenous fistula creation to laparoscopic gastric bypass to bariatric and metabolic surgery to rectal anal surgery to sclerotherapy to varicose vein intervention to hernia repair and many others.

A MECCA FOR SURGICAL EXCELLENCE

A hospital should feel like home: a hug of cosy comforts, kind hospitality, and therapeutic encounters. Putra Medical Centre has made the above ethos a daily commitment for the beloved communities of Kedah. Especially where the thought of surgery itself can be daunting, here’s a private healthcare hub which prioritises a calming atmosphere and patron-friendly experiences.
