Putra Medical Centre Alor Setar: Prioritising People Over Profits Amid Rising Insurance Costs

March 2025

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

With medical insurance premiums in Malaysia expected to increase by 40–70% by 2025, many families are now struggling to access quality treatment. Amid this growing crisis, Putra Medical Centre (PMC) Alor Setar has emerged as a solution. Guided by our “Life is Precious” philosophy, we are committed to providing quality healthcare at affordable prices, because health is not just for those who “can afford it”, it is the right of all.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Lee Yong Qian, Strategic Director of PMC Alor Setar, is part of the hospital’s senior leadership team.

Strategic Director PMC, Mr Lee Yong Qian, shared his views on the transformation steps taken:

We understand healthcare costs are rising, and many families are feeling the financial strain. At Putra Medical Centre Alor Setar, we’re focused on affordable care options without compromising on quality. Our goal is clear, every individual has the right to receive appropriate treatment because health is a basic human right.”

The Rising Costs of Medical Insurance

In Malaysia, medical inflation hit 12.6% in 2023, far superseding the global average. Several factors contribute to these escalating insurance premiums including:

1.  Price Differentiation:

Patients with insurance are often charged higher fees, around 150–300% more than cash-paying patients. This caused insurance claims to skyrocket.

2.  Overuse of Services:

Practices like ‘buffet syndrome,’ where insured patients over-use services, strain the system further. Similarly, past cost fallacies and bureaucratic complexity in referrals to “clinical pathways (CP)” exacerbate inefficiencies in treatment delivery.

3.  Excessive Mark-ups:

Some private hospitals impose significant mark-ups on basic medical supplies and medicines, making essential treatments much more expensive than they should be.

This situation has caused many Malaysians, especially the young and retired, to cancel their insurance policies. As a result, more and more people are turning to government hospitals because they can no longer afford the costs of private medical care.

Private hospitals impose significant mark-ups on quite a few items like antibiotics and cotton swabs.

Quality Care at Affordable Prices

As a more sustainable alternative, Putra Medical Centre (PMC) Alor Setar is committed to offering quality treatment at lower prices than most private hospitals.

We ensure that treatment charges always comply with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), so that every patient receives the best service without being burdened with excessive costs.

We at PMC are always looking for a balance between price and quality. For us, healthcare should not be a financial burden on society. Instead, we want to be an institution that puts patients first and provides the best treatment without hidden charges or excessive prices.

For example, an emergency C-section at Putra Medical Centre Alor Setar costs only nearly half as much as at other private hospitals. This erases the burden of paying through the nose for patients and their families.

Investing In Prevention And Strategic Cooperation

PMC also takes initiatives to address the issue of rising healthcare costs from the grassroots. We invest in preventive health programs such as:

  1. Regular health check-ups
  2. Vaccination campaigns
  3. Health awareness programs

These measures aim to prevent chronic diseases before they become more serious, while also reducing dependence on expensive treatment later on.

In addition, PMC is also aware of the challenges of accessing treatment in rural areas, especially in Alor Setar and other areas in Kedah. Therefore, we have expanded our emergency and medical assistance services to ensure that those living far from hospitals still receive immediate assistance.

For us, access to healthcare should not be dependent on location. We are always looking for solutions to reach more patients, especially those living in remote areas.

PMC also collaborates with government agencies and NGOs to strengthen primary healthcare services and improve the delivery of health services to communities in need.

Impacting Lives, Inspiring Change

The “people first” approach implemented at PMC not only helps patients, but also has an impact on the local healthcare market. By maintaining affordable prices, we hope to encourage other hospitals to be more transparent and responsible in setting treatment prices.

The ultimate goal of any healthcare organization should be to save lives, not just to make a profit. At PMC, we serve the community, and we will continue to uphold this principle with integrity and compassion.

As Malaysia struggles with rising insurance costs and an increasingly overburdened public healthcare system, Putra Medical Centre Alor Setar continues to stand as a symbol of hope and fairness in healthcare. We prove that quality treatment doesn’t have to be expensive, it is our responsibility to make it affordable for all.

For the people of Kedah, believe us, we are not just a hospital, we are a savior and a trusted health partner.
