A stroke is a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. Without prompt treatment, it can cause permanent brain damage, disability or death.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 11.9 million new cases of stroke occurred worldwide in 2021. Stroke remains a major global health concern, making awareness and early action essential. [1]
What Are the Warning Signs of a Stroke?
Recognising stroke symptoms early can help save lives. Remember B.E. F.A.S.T.:
- B – Balance: Sudden dizziness or loss of balance.
- E – Eyes: Sudden blurred vision or loss of vision.
- F – Face: One side of the face droops when smiling.
- A – Arms: Weakness or numbness in one arm.
- S – Speech: Slurred speech or difficulty speaking.
- T – Time: Call 999 immediately if you notice any of these symptoms. [1, 2]
Stroke symptoms may occur suddenly and not everyone experiences all the warning signs.
Who Is at Risk of Stroke?
Several factors can increase the risk of stroke, including:
- High blood pressure.
- Diabetes and high cholesterol.
- Smoking.
- Physical inactivity and an unhealthy diet.
- Excess body weight and certain heart conditions.
Although some risk factors, such as age and family history, cannot be changed, managing medical conditions and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce your risk. [1]
How Can You Reduce Your Risk?
Taking care of your health can make a difference. Have your blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checked regularly, follow your prescribed treatment, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly and avoid smoking.
If you have existing medical conditions, consult your doctor about managing them effectively to reduce your risk of stroke.
Remember that, stroke can happen to anyone, at any age. Do not wait for symptoms to improve or attempt to drive yourself to the hospital.
