School Holidays and Screen Time: Keeping Children Healthy and Active

School holidays are a great time for children to rest, play and spend quality time with family. However, without the usual school routine, children may also spend more time on smartphones, tablets, television or video games.

While screen time can be part of a child’s daily life, too much recreational screen use may reduce time spent on physical activity, outdoor play, sleep and family interaction.

Is Your Child Spending Too Much Time on Screens?

Parents may want to pay attention if their child:

  • Spends long periods on screens every day
  • Has difficulty stopping screen use
  • Stays up late using devices
  • Becomes irritable when asked to stop
  • Has less interest in outdoor play or other activities
  • Spends less time interacting with family and friends

These signs do not necessarily mean that screen use is the only cause, but they may indicate that the child’s daily routine needs some adjustment.

How Can Parents Manage Screen Time During the Holidays?

A few simple changes can help children enjoy a healthier school holiday:

Set a daily routine
Maintain regular sleep, meal, activity and screen times even when school is out.

Encourage outdoor activities
Plan activities such as cycling, swimming, sports, walking or playing at the park.

Create screen-free times
Keep mealtimes, family activities and the period before bedtime free from recreational screen use.

Offer alternatives
Encourage reading, drawing, board games, cooking or other activities that children can enjoy without a device.

Be a good role model
Children learn from their parents. Try to put your own devices away during family time.

When Should You See a Paediatrician?

If you are concerned that your child’s screen use is affecting their sleep, behaviour, physical activity, learning, social interaction or overall wellbeing, consider speaking with a paediatrician.

A paediatrician can assess your child’s overall health and development and provide appropriate advice based on their age and individual needs.

Make the Most of the School Holidays

School holidays are an opportunity for children to rest, play, explore and spend time with the people around them.

Screens can be part of the holiday, but balance is important. With a simple routine and healthy boundaries, parents can help children enjoy their holidays while supporting their overall health and development.

At Putra Medical Centre, our paediatrician is here to support your child’s health and wellbeing.
