Leadership Spotlight: A Heart for Service
Profile Feature: Col. (R) Dr. Mohamad Anuar Mohamad
Interventional Cardiologist, Putra Medical Centre, Alor Setar
With over two decades of distinguished service in the medical field and a lifelong dedication to community’s well-being, Col. (R) Dr. Mohamad Anuar Mohamad stands as a beacon of clinical excellence and compassionate leadership. As an interventional cardiologist at Putra Medical Centre (PMC) Alor Setar, Dr. Anuar’s story reflects a journey driven by purpose, perseverance and passion.
A Calling From The Heart
Dr. Anuar’s path to medicine was rooted in the values instilled by his parents. “They always reminded me that healing others is a noble act and that in doing so, your own needs will be fulfilled,” he shares. Guided by this profound sense of purpose, he pursued one of the most demanding yet rewarding specialisations, cardiology.
Motivated by the growing burden of heart disease, the world’s leading cause of death Dr. Anuar recognised the urgent need for more cardiac specialists. “The scarcity of cardiologists meant too many patients were left waiting. I knew I could make a difference by choosing this field.”
Academic Excellence and Global Exposure
Dr. Anuar’s academic journey began at Army Medical College, Islamabad under a government scholarship. His interest in cardiology was ignited during his formative years at the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC).
A pivotal moment in his career was attending a professional course at the San Antonio Military Medical Centre in Texas, renowned centre for clinical trials like AFCAPS/TEXCAPS. “That experience broadened my clinical outlook,” he notes, adding that his honorary affiliation with the U.S. Army Medical Regiment remains one of his proudest professional milestones.
Medicine Beyond The Hospital Walls
Beyond the hospital, Dr. Anuar is a committed advocate for community health. He actively supports various social initiatives from CPR awareness workshops and free tuition programs to cleanliness campaigns. “These activities help me stay down to the earth,” he says. “They connect me to the very people I serve.”
Delivering Precision and Hope In Cardiology
In his role as an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Anuar takes pride in offering immediate life-saving care. “This field is about giving people a second chance,” he explains. “Reopening a blocked artery is like unlocking life itself.”
One of his most memorable cases involved a 16-year-old patient with end-stage heart failure. “A heart transplant was his only option. Seeing him recover and thrive post-surgery is something I’ll never forget.”
Dr. Anuar emphasises the importance of teamwork and precision in his field. “Interventional cardiology evolves rapidly. It demands efficiency, adaptability and a commitment to constant learning.”
Inspired By Innovation, Grounded By Values
Influenced by pioneers in cardiology and inspired by ongoing technological advancements, Dr. Anuar remains at the forefront of clinical innovation. He highlights tools like rotational atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) as transformative options for complex cases.
However, he remains pragmatic. “Not every case is suitable for intervention. Individualised care is essential and cost-effectiveness must be considered. Still the potential is immense.”
Coming Full Circle: The PMC Chapter
Returning to serve in his home state of Kedah marks a meaningful chapter in Dr. Anuar’s career. “Being part of PMC allows me to contribute to my community while working in a collaborative and professional environment.”
Since joining PMC nearly a year ago, he has found joy in the hospital’s cohesive culture. “The camaraderie especially through our social and religious initiatives, strengthens our sense of unity and purpose. That spirit reflects in the care we provide.”
To patients at PMC, his message is clear. “You are in safe hands. Our care is professional, accessible and centered on your needs.”
A Message For Future Generations
To aspiring doctors and cardiologists, Dr. Anuar offers this insight:
“Interventional cardiology is not just about procedures. It’s about restoring hope whether through acute interventions, rhythm stabilisation or advanced therapies like CRTDs and LVADs. The heart is complex but so is the privilege of healing it.”
Dr. Anuar’s journey is a testament to the power of purposeful leadership in healthcare where expertise meets empathy and service meets innovation.
