Leadership With Heart: Dato’ Lee Gaik Cheng Inspiring Healthcare in Northern Malaysia
Every hospital has a heartbeat. At Putra Medical Centre Alor Setar, that heartbeat has remained steady for more than three decades, guided by a leader whose vision goes beyond medicine. Dato’ Lee Gaik Cheng, Managing Director of PMCK Berhad, has dedicated her life to ensuring healthcare in northern Malaysia is not only advanced but also compassionate, accessible and grounded in dignity.
Her journey began humbly. In 1993, while waiting for her exam results, she took a part-time job at a small clinic founded by Dato’ Dr. Lim Kim Huat. Her cousin, who was moving to Singapore, introduced her to the position. From the very beginning, Dato’ Lee handled everything herself. She registered patients, dispensed medicine, collected payments, cleaned, changed bedsheets, fed patients and even accompanied them to the restroom. In time, she discovered her calling and decided to stay, embracing the demanding work and the chance to make a real difference.
While pursuing an Accounting degree at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, she continued assisting the clinic part-time, managing administration and finances. Upon graduation, she returned full-time and gradually transitioned into a professional manager, eventually becoming Dato’ Dr. Lim’s partner in his vision for a modern medical centre.
The story of Putra Medical Centre itself is deeply intertwined with personal experiences of care and resilience. Dato’ Dr. Lim, inspired by his mother’s illness, founded the clinic to provide accessible medical care to the people of Kedah. What began as a small clinic with two medical officers, eight resident specialists and sixty-two beds has grown over the years into a 121-bed acute care hospital serving thousands annually. Today, it offers more than fourteen medical specialties, delivers over one thousand births each year and provides comprehensive care across northern Malaysia.
Under Dato’ Lee’s leadership, PMCK has grown significantly while also strengthening professionalism and service quality. She guided the hospital through ISO certification and later into becoming a listed institution on the ACE Market. Her philosophy is simple yet powerful. Operational efficiency is a form of compassion. Efficient systems mean patients wait less, costs are responsibly managed and trust is strengthened. Every decision, from streamlining digital workflows to enhancing patient care, reflects her unwavering commitment to putting people first.
The hospital’s achievements have been recognised regionally. In 2025, PMCK Berhad was named one of Asia’s Best Performing Companies at the ACES Awards, with Dato’ Lee representing the Group at the ceremony. Later that year, PMC Kulim received the Excellence Award at QUEST 2025 in collaboration with EAG Consulting Sdn. Bhd., celebrating innovation, quality and sustainable healthcare infrastructure. These accolades highlight operational excellence but more importantly, they reflect her patient-centered and ethical leadership.
What sets Dato’ Lee apart is not only her professional acumen but also her personal empathy. She brings a deep understanding of the challenges faced by patients and families, shaping PMCK’s preventive health programmes including diabetic management, community screenings, wound care and public awareness campaigns. These initiatives are not publicity. They are a response to the real needs of the community and a commitment to improving health and well-being for all.
Colleagues describe her as calm, steady and inspiring. Moreover, her son, Lee Yong Qian, now Strategic Director at PMCK, calls her his 靠山, the mountain he leans on. Mountains do not seek recognition. They provide stability and safety. For PMCK’s nearly 500 staff, Dato’ Lee embodies that quiet strength, guiding the hospital through challenges and growth.
Looking ahead, PMCK continues to evolve. The Kulim facility, designed with MyCREST five-star sustainability certification, demonstrates environmentally responsible healthcare in practice. Furthermore, energy-efficient architecture, solar integration, digitised systems and patient-centered design ensure the hospital remains resilient, efficient and accessible for generations. For Dato’ Lee, sustainability is practical. It protects patients and strengthens the healthcare system for the long term.
International Women’s Day is often a time for symbolic celebration. However, Dato’ Lee’s story speaks to something deeper. It is about decades of dedication, quiet perseverance and disciplined growth. From a young general assistant to the Managing Director of a leading listed healthcare group, her journey is a testament to resilience, vision and purpose.
As her son expressed, “I see you, I appreciate you, I love you. Your strength inspires me every single day.” This Women’s Day, we celebrates Dato’ Lee Gaik Cheng, not just as a corporate executive but as a mountain of quiet strength and unwavering dedication, shaping the future of healthcare and inspiring countless others to lead with heart.
